LG Uplus Develops 5G 'Autonomous Driving Robot'
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] LG Uplus announced on the 6th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Unmanned Solution regarding the ‘autonomous driving robot business.’
Through this collaboration, LG Uplus will integrate its video analysis solution, gas detection Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, and communication technology into the autonomous driving robots owned by Unmanned Solution. The goal is to commercialize ‘outdoor autonomous service robots’ that can be used for various purposes such as patrol, logistics, and disinfection. The two companies will introduce the first robot, an autonomous ‘patrol robot’ that conducts 24-hour unmanned patrols of factory sites. After conducting a pilot test of the autonomous patrol robot for large plant companies within this year, they plan to pursue official commercialization next year.
This robot is equipped with a thermal imaging camera and harmful gas detection IoT sensors to autonomously patrol the entire factory 24 hours a day. When it detects risks such as abnormal temperatures or harmful gases, it immediately sends real-time video and alarms to the integrated control center, helping to efficiently manage the factory site. In particular, LG Uplus enhanced the precision of autonomous driving by utilizing real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning technology and 5G communication.

They also plan to commercialize an autonomous ‘logistics robot.’ Using autonomous driving technology, it will transport parts to warehouses located outside the factory to improve work efficiency. LG Uplus’s logistics robot can travel at a maximum speed of 30 km/h and carry heavy loads of up to 150 kg, making it highly suitable for extensive use in large-scale facilities such as power plants and large factories. Seo Jae-yong, Head of Convergence at LG Uplus (Senior Executive Director), said, “5G is essential to operate autonomous driving robots that move across wide outdoor areas like factories,” adding, “Based on 5G communication, we will combine our differentiated industrial solutions such as video analysis solutions and IoT to introduce various autonomous driving robots for patrol, logistics, disinfection, and cleaning.”
