Seongnam City Collects 6.5 Billion KRW in Local Tax Arrears in First Half of Year
[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province collected 6.5 billion KRW in local tax arrears in the first half of this year.
On the 31st, Seongnam City announced that it had recovered 5,437 cases of arrears amounting to 6.513 billion KRW by deploying a "Special Tax Resource Management Team" composed of 10 experienced debt collection officials during the first half of this year (January to June).
The city previously targeted taxpayers with arrears exceeding 3 million KRW by dispatching the Special Tax Resource Management Team to conduct home searches and carry out license plate seizures.
The movable properties seized during the home searches included 42 pieces of precious metals such as gold rings, gold bracelets, and gold necklaces, 10 luxury watches, 1 luxury bag, and 366 home appliances, totaling 419 items.
They also confiscated 15.23 million KRW in cash.
In addition, the city seized license plates from 29 vehicles with unpaid automobile taxes and parking violation fines.
Um Gap-yong, head of the city's Tax Resource Management Division, said, "During the process of executing movable property seizures, some taxpayers refused to open their doors and stubbornly resisted, using abusive language and pushing away officials, which caused many difficulties. To ensure tax fairness, we will apply comprehensive pressure on taxpayers who deliberately avoid paying taxes by conducting home searches, seizing movable properties, and imposing travel bans to collect overdue taxes."
