Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology - LG Electronics, AI Field Industry-Academia Cooperation MOU
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (President Kim Gi-seon·GIST) announced on the 30th that it has signed a mutual business agreement with LG Electronics Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (Director Kim Jumin) for industry-academia cooperation and research and development in the field of artificial intelligence.
Through this agreement, GIST and LG Electronics plan to promote the advancement of national science and technology and enhance the research capabilities of both institutions through AI-centered technological cooperation.
The main contents of the agreement include ▲joint cooperation in the project to establish an AI-centered industrial convergence cluster in Gwangju Metropolitan City ▲joint participation in the AI-based startup support competition "Kkumkkuneun Ai (AI)" ▲promotion and proposals for the use of LG Electronics' AI platform targeting startup companies within the cluster.
LG Electronics will jointly participate with GIST in the country's largest "Kkumkkuneun Ai (AI)" competition, conducting preliminary and final rounds together for selected categories in three specialized fields (healthcare, automotive, energy).
The final winners of the competition, determined through tournaments by selected categories, will receive prize money along with certificates from LG Electronics.
Kim Jumin, Director of LG Electronics Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, said, "Through this agreement, we will share the ThinQ platform, which contains LG Electronics' accumulated AI technology know-how, with prospective entrepreneurs within the Gwangju AI cluster," adding, "At the same time, we will work together to create new customer value by utilizing AI in various fields."

Meanwhile, starting in October, the preliminary rounds of "Kkumkkuneun Ai (AI)" will officially begin. This competition will be conducted based on demonstrations of specialized AI categories selected through a demand survey of AI professional companies. The total prize money is expected to be about 234 million KRW, making it the largest competition of its kind in the country.
