COVID-19 Effect? There's a Reason for the Popularity of Ultra-Mini Bags
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), light clothing for outings near home or short trips has gained attention, and bags are gradually becoming smaller. Beyond the typical mini bags that have been popular over the past 3 to 4 years, ultra-mini bags and micro mini bags, just big enough to hold a smartphone, are gaining popularity.
According to the related industry on the 30th, the ultra-mini bag first released this year by lifestyle company LF's Hazzys Accessories recorded about 200% of the initially targeted sales volume. The 'Pauline' ultra-mini bag has been so popular that it has sold out multiple times and is currently in its 8th reorder (reproduction). The 'Daisy' ultra-mini bag, released in April this year, is currently undergoing its 6th reorder. A Hazzys Accessories official said, "Riding on the popularity of ultra-mini bags that started earlier this year, we are introducing various styles of mini bags with expanded styles and colors."
Kurun, operated by Kolon Industries FnC division (hereafter Kolon FnC), also recorded a 23% sales growth in three types of spring and summer season mini bags sold from January to July 28 compared to the same period last year. They can be styled in various ways, such as worn over the shoulder, lightly carried by wrapping the strap around the hand, or worn around the waist. A Kolon FnC official said, "Women’s carried items are becoming increasingly simplified, leading to a preference for smaller bags," adding, "In particular, carrying a medium-sized bag simultaneously or wearing two different ultra-mini bags crossed over each other is also gaining popularity."
Online sales have also increased noticeably. Shinsegae International’s private brand (PB) Ten Months has introduced a handbag collection composed solely of mini bags through its online mall SI Village, receiving a positive response. Among the products, the red color sold 80% of the initial stock within two months of release, while black and beige showed a 70% sales rate.
The fashion industry analyzes that the popularity of mini bags has increased further after COVID-19. Concerns about virus infection have made people reluctant to place smartphones on shared surfaces when going out, and with more frequent remote work and light activities near home, the number of items to carry has decreased, which also influenced this trend.
A Shinsegae International official said, "Ultra-mini bags that can be worn over the shoulder free up both hands, making them practical and hygienic, according to many customers’ evaluations." The lighter clothing style after COVID-19 also influenced the ultra-mini bag craze. An industry official said, "The trend of leggings and one-mile wear has deepened casualization in fashion, and there is a growing preference for neat and practical mini bags that suit casual fashion instead of big bags or designer bags."
