'Jungnang Mujigae Life Interpretation Group' Provides Interpretation Support in 8 Languages
Multicultural Families Comprising 18 Marriage Immigrants... Jungnang Mujigae Life Interpretation Service Supports About 50 Interpretation Cases for Foreigners in Self-Quarantine Due to COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] “I believe everyone should be able to live without major inconveniences or discrimination. The safety and stability of residents' lives is the reason for Jungnang-gu's existence.”
These are the words of Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu.
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has prepared a special program for residents who have difficulty communicating. The district announced that it will operate the ‘Jungnang Rainbow Life Interpretation Team’ service for multicultural families and foreigners.
The ‘Jungnang Rainbow Life Interpretation Team’ service is composed of 18 marriage immigrants fluent in Korean from the Jungnang-gu Healthy Family and Multicultural Family Support Center. This interpretation team supports interpretation at the district office, community service centers, police stations, daycare centers, elementary schools, hospitals, banks, and other locations. While they sometimes travel to places requiring interpretation, recently, due to COVID-19, they have been providing support via telephone interpretation.
The languages available for interpretation include eight in total: Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, Japanese, Mongolian, Cambodian, and Uzbek. The interpretation service provided until July for foreigners under self-quarantine who had communication difficulties due to COVID-19 has reached about 50 cases.
The reason the ‘Jungnang Rainbow Life Interpretation Team’ draws particular attention is that it not only provides stable jobs for multicultural family marriage immigrants but also helps multicultural families and foreigners who experience communication difficulties to successfully settle, achieving a win-win effect.
“Seeing people going through the inconveniences and difficulties I felt when I first arrived makes me want to help even more. Having a job also helps me economically, so it’s very good.”
These are the words of Huynh Thi Phuoc, who is in charge of Vietnamese interpretation.
