On the same day, Superintendent Jang posted a message on his social media (SNS) welcoming the establishment of the Jeonnam medical school, along with a photo holding a sign that read, “We welcome the confirmation of the medical school establishment in Jeonnam with the Jeonnam education family.”
The government and the ruling party recently announced the “Plan to Expand Medical School Quotas and Establish Public Medical Schools” at a party-government meeting, which includes expanding the medical school quotas that had been frozen for 15 years and establishing new medical schools in regions without any medical schools.
The Provincial Office of Education expects that if a medical school with the best educational conditions is established in the Jeonnam region, many outstanding students from Jeonnam who wish to enter medical school will be prevented from going outside the region.
Superintendent Jang Seok-woong said, “This is very welcome news for Jeonnam, the only metropolitan local government in the country without a medical school,” and added, “If a medical school is established in Jeonnam, local residents will be able to receive higher-quality medical services.”
