Democratic Party Gwangju Provincial Party Chair Candidate Registration Day One Still Fails to Decide 'Election Method'
Min Hyung-bae, Lee Byung-hoon, and Jo Oh-seop Mentioned... Weighing Between Consensus Endorsement and Primary Election
Candidate Registration Until the 30th, Local Political Circles Say "Need to Show Unity"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] On the first day of candidate registration for the Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Metropolitan City Party Chairperson on the 29th, it appeared that no consensus had been reached regarding either consensus nomination or primary elections.
According to the Democratic Party Gwangju City Party on the 29th, candidate registration for the Gwangju City Party Chairperson is being conducted from that day until 6 p.m. on the 30th.
Currently, three members of the National Assembly?Min Hyung-bae, Lee Byung-hoon, and Cho Oh-seop?are being mentioned as candidates for the Gwangju City Party Chairperson.
Recently, they held one discussion regarding consensus nomination and primary elections but reportedly failed to find common ground.
Therefore, it is expected that a decision on consensus nomination or primary elections will be made internally on the day, followed by candidate registration on the 30th.
In this regard, voices of concern have emerged in the local political circles that if a primary election is chosen and conducted, discord may arise.
Given the upcoming presidential and local elections and the recent internal party incidents causing turmoil, there is a reason to strengthen internal unity through consensus nomination rather than a primary election.
A political insider said, “Even if it is called a beautiful election, an election must be seen as a battle in any case,” and added, “For the Democratic Party to internally harmonize and show trust to the public, wouldn’t consensus nomination be more appropriate than a primary election?”
The local political circles explain that the recent case where Assemblyman Shin Jeong-hoon conceded to Assemblyman Kim Seung-nam regarding the Jeonnam Provincial Party Chairperson and agreed to nominate Kim as the sole candidate can be seen in the same context.
Meanwhile, if the election proceeds as a primary with two or more candidates rather than consensus nomination, an election campaign briefing and ballot number drawing will be held before the campaign begins.
Then, from the 5th to the 7th of next month, online voting and ARS voting will be conducted targeting national delegates and party members with voting rights.
