Director Park Hoon-jung's 'Night in Paradise' Heads to Venice International Film Festival
Non-Competitive Section Invitation "Director Park Hoon-jung's Name Will Be More Widely Known in the Future"
Directed by Park Hoon-jung, "Night in Paradise" is the only Korean film to be screened at the 77th Venice International Film Festival in Italy.
The festival organizing committee announced on the 28th (Korean time) that the film was selected as an Out of Competition entry. It is the first time in four years since Korean cinema was invited to the Venice Film Festival, following Kim Jee-woon’s "The Age of Shadows" in 2016. Alberto Barbera, the festival’s director, described it as "one of the outstanding gangster films recently produced in the Korean film industry," adding, "The screenplay based on complex characters and the impressive, masterful direction stand out." He also said, "The name of director Park Hoon-jung, who handled both the screenplay and direction, will become more widely known in the future."
"Night in Paradise" is a noir film depicting the story of a man targeted by organized crime and a woman standing at the end of her life. It stars Um Tae-goo, Jeon Yeo-been, Cha Seung-won, Lee Ki-young, and Park Ho-san. Almost all scenes were filmed on Jeju Island. Director Park Hoon-jung said, "We unfolded a story stained with blood against the beautiful southern Jeju sea and sky," adding, "I hope audiences will find the irony between the background and the story interesting from each perspective."

First held in 1932, the Venice Film Festival is the oldest international film festival in the world. Along with the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival, it is considered one of the world's three major film festivals. This year, it will take place from September 2 to 12 on Venice and Lido Island. However, due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the event scale has been significantly reduced. Therefore, attendance of director Park Hoon-jung and the lead actors at the red carpet event has not yet been decided.
