Jeon Nam-do Councilor Na Gwang-guk Points Out Solutions to Fishermen's Opposition to Offshore Wind Power
Rep. Na Urges Adequate Fisheries Compensation for 30 Years of Lost Fishing Activities Due to Loss of Fishing Zones
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Na Gwang-guk, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, pointed out the reduction of fishing grounds and dispute resolution measures for fishermen caused by the offshore wind power project.
The offshore wind power project being developed in the Sinan-gun area is worth 54 trillion won with a capacity of 8.2GW, accounting for 66.7% of South Korea's total offshore wind power development goal of 12GW.
The construction of the offshore wind power complex has positive effects in terms of securing renewable energy and is a Jeonnam-type win-win job project that will create 120,000 new jobs.
Councilor Na Gwang-guk stated, “Offshore wind power is the sector with the strongest opposition from residents among all renewable energy power generation projects,” and added, “Once offshore wind power facilities are installed, fishing activities in nearby areas are basically prohibited for 20 to 30 years.”
He continued, “There are many obstacles to overcome for the success of Jeonnam’s Green New Deal offshore wind power. With more than 1,000 wind turbines installed, navigation within 500 meters around them is not allowed, which causes strong opposition from fishermen who make their living through fishing.”
Councilor Na emphasized, “While it is important to create 120,000 customized jobs through the construction of the 8.2GW offshore wind power complex in the southwestern region, existing fishermen’s jobs and livelihoods must not be taken away to create new jobs,” and insisted, “Dispute resolution and sufficient compensation for fishermen, as well as thorough investigations into the impact on the marine environment and fishery resources, are necessary to alleviate fishermen’s concerns.”
He concluded, “Since the Sinan offshore wind power complex project is a key project of Jeonnam Province, active communication and coexistence with local residents must come first.”
