[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu Reporter]Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Park Han-gi apologized for the 'intentional defection by crossing a drainage ditch' incident involving North Korean defector Kim Mo (24).
On the 28th, Chairman Park attended the National Defense Committee plenary session at the National Assembly and stated, "We are taking the Ganghwa Island defection situation very seriously and deeply feel responsible," adding, "Since the (North Korean) wooden boat entered Samcheok Port on June 15 last year, we have made every effort to improve the inadequate surveillance conditions with utmost determination."
He continued, "During this time, there was a failure in the garrison surveillance operation earlier this year, and consecutive coastal surveillance failures occurred due to illegal immigration in Taean, leading us to devise supplementary measures when the Ganghwa Island defection incident occurred."
