"Life Jackets Are Life-Saving Vests"... 20 Awards in Marine and Coastal Safety Contest
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Coast Guard announced on the 29th the selection of 20 award-winning works for the '2020 Marine Safety and Coastal Safety Integrated Contest,' held jointly for the first time this year.
To spread marine safety culture and raise awareness of marine safety, the contest was held from May 13 to June 28, receiving a total of 561 entries across three categories: posters, videos (UCC), and webtoons.
Afterward, a panel of experts in each field evaluated the entries based on relevance to the theme, timeliness, artistic quality, and communicability, selecting a total of 20 award-winning works, including one grand prize winner in each category.
The grand prize winner in the poster category was Park Yerin, whose work creatively depicted a life jacket made of straw, evoking the desperate moment of grasping at straws, thereby ingeniously symbolizing that a life jacket is indeed a life-saving vest, earning high marks.
In the UCC category, the grand prize went to Oh Kyunghee for her work titled "The Day I Went to the Beach." This video is structured as a diary describing how safety rules were well observed while enjoying the sea. It was highly praised for naturally and easily introducing safe sea usage rules from a child's perspective.
The grand prize in the webtoon category was awarded to Lee Jaho for his work titled "So, No One Was Left in the Sea." This piece calmly portrayed in monochrome the process of ten friends who went on a summer trip to the sea, with those who violated safety rules disappearing one by one due to accidents, raising awareness about the importance of adhering to marine safety regulations.
The grand prize winners in each category receive the Gold Prize (Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award) and a cash prize of 3 million won. Additionally, 4 Silver Prize winners (Korea Coast Guard Commissioner Award), 8 Bronze Prize winners, and 5 Encouragement Prize winners will receive a total of 27 million won in prize money.
The winning works can be viewed on the Marine Safety Contest website. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Coast Guard plan to compile the winning entries into an electronic award collection to distribute to elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide, as well as use them as promotional materials at various events and facilities aimed at fostering marine safety culture.
Jung Taesung, Director of the Marine Safety Policy Division at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "We appreciate the great interest and participation in the contest held jointly with the Korea Coast Guard for the first time this year. We will continue to promote various policies that allow public participation to spread marine safety culture."
