Seoul Metropolitan Council Education Committee Vice-Chairpersons Jeon Byeong-ju and Kim Yong-yeon Appointed
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] The Seoul Metropolitan Council's Education Committee held its 1st meeting during the recess of the 296th extraordinary session and appointed Assemblyman Jeon Byeong-ju (Democratic Party, Gwangjin 1) and Assemblyman Kim Yong-yeon (Democratic Party, Gangseo 4) as vice-chairmen of the 10th term's latter half Education Committee.
Vice-Chairman Jeon Byeong-ju, formerly a council member of Gwangjin District, served as a member of the Education Committee during the first half of the 10th Seoul Metropolitan Council. He made significant efforts to strengthen the public nature of private kindergartens, including proposing a bill urging the revision of laws for mandatory early childhood education and the renaming of kindergartens.
Vice-Chairman Jeon stated, "Due to rapidly changing social environments such as low birth rates and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the national responsibility for education is being emphasized more than ever," adding, "I will fulfill my role as vice-chairman to ensure that Seoul education guarantees publicness and leads future education."
Vice-Chairman Kim Yong-yeon currently serves as a standing member of the National Unification Advisory Council and was active as a member of the Health and Welfare Committee during the first half of the 10th Seoul Metropolitan Council. He has been recognized for his vigorous legislative activities domestically, including receiving the Excellent Legislative Award from the Association of Chairpersons of City and Provincial Councils nationwide.
Vice-Chairman Kim said, "In the era of local autonomy, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education should go beyond merely implementing national policies and actively develop education policies suited to the Seoul region," and added, "As vice-chairman, I will do my best together with the chairman and fellow committee members to help Seoul education develop further."

Regarding the appointment of the vice-chairmen for the latter half of the Education Committee, Chairman Choi Ki-chan (Democratic Party, Geumcheon 2) stated, "I am grateful to have two vice-chairmen with high interest and expertise in education to operate the Education Committee. In the second half, the Education Committee will strengthen oversight and checks on the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education to do its utmost to help Seoul education develop further."
