Prime Minister Jeong: "Terrorism with New Technologies is Evolving... We Must Recognize That We Are Not Exempt"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun stated on the 27th, "International terrorist organizations are continuously evolving by applying various new technologies, including drones, to terrorism," adding, "We must recognize that we are by no means exempt from terrorism."
At the 11th National Counterterrorism Committee meeting held at the Government Seoul Office that day, Prime Minister Chung said, "Our government's top priority is to protect the lives and safety of the people."
He assessed, "Considering both domestic and international situations, we must never be complacent about the threat of terrorism in the future, and especially from an international perspective, terrorism has become commonplace."
He then urged, "Relevant agencies should make greater efforts to maintain a safe Republic of Korea from terrorism through proactive prevention and thorough response."
Regarding the first half of the year’s national counterterrorism activities, Prime Minister Chung evaluated, "We have achieved the desired results in both prevention and response aspects."
He explained, "By proactively responding to instability in the Middle East region, we were able to prevent damage to our companies and citizens operating locally, and through close international cooperation, we safely rescued our citizens who were kidnapped in the West African waters."
