Samsung Electronics Refutes '6G Premature' Claim: "Telecommunications Timeline Is 10 Years Ahead"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Jo] "The timeline of telecommunications has always moved 10 years faster. Securing 6G leadership will open new possibilities for Samsung Electronics."
Samsung Electronics has rebutted some criticisms that research on 6G mobile communication technology is premature.
Choi Seong-hyun, Head of the Next Generation Communication Research Center at Samsung Research (Executive Vice President), stated in an article titled "Why We Must Prepare for 6G Now," posted on Samsung Electronics Newsroom on the 26th, "Leadership in communication technology is the first essential condition to win the fierce competition of future cutting-edge technologies that will soon unfold."
Choi emphasized the importance of long-term vision and sustained research in advanced technology fields, citing countries like the United States and Finland that began 6G research in 2018.
He said, "Some question whether we should already start research on 6G, which is expected to be commercialized only by 2028, but the timeline of telecommunications has always moved 10 years faster," adding, "When 4G was still unfamiliar, Samsung Electronics was able to become the world's first to commercialize 5G by focusing investment on 5G standardization and preemptive technology research."
Following Samsung Electronics' recent release of the 6G white paper, there have been repeated criticisms that it is premature given that 5G has not yet been fully activated. Samsung reminded the public that it had been preparing core technology research for 5G leadership for over 10 years.
Choi highlighted that real-time communication systems and ultra-high-speed connectivity must precede future industries such as autonomous vehicles and robots, and expressed expectations that "securing 6G future technology leadership can open new possibilities for Samsung Electronics and greatly contribute to South Korea's leap as a leading country in next-generation communication technology."
He also reiterated Samsung's philosophy by stating, "Only proactive research and investment can maintain the 'super-gap'." He added, "6G research requires a broad perspective that prioritizes the overall development of the telecommunications industry over immediate profits, and only companies that can invest with a long-term vision can lead the standardization of communication technology," emphasizing Samsung's role.
