Chonnam National University Hospital Launches Full-Scale Development of AI-Based Chronic Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Technology
Ministry of Health and Welfare Selected for the 'Research-Centered Hospital Development Project'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chonnam National University Hospital has been selected for the Ministry of Health and Welfare's research-oriented hospital promotion project and will actively engage in the development of AI-based chronic disease diagnosis and treatment technologies.
According to Chonnam National University Hospital on the 26th, the KC-AIM consortium, consisting of Professor Kim Byung-chae (Director of the Institute of Biomedical Science) from Chonnam National University, Korea University Guro Hospital, and Osong Advanced Medical Industry Promotion Foundation, was selected in the Ministry of Health and Welfare's 2020 research-oriented hospital promotion project competition for hospital-specific specialized field support.
The "Research-Oriented Hospital Promotion Project" aims to integrate and open research resources and medical infrastructure within research-oriented hospitals under a unified governance to promote R&D cooperation among industry, academia, research institutes, and hospitals, and to establish a demand-based R&D business model capable of continuously generating profits.
In this competition, the KC-AIM consortium applied with the research project titled "Advancement of an Intelligent Innovative Medical Technology Platform Based on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data" in the field of "Securing Future Promising Technologies and Achieving Practical Results in New Drugs and Medical Devices Using Key Technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution (such as Artificial Intelligence)" and was finally selected.
The goal of this research project is to commercialize future convergence-type innovative medical technologies by advancing diagnostic and medical device and new drug development platforms based on the world's best AI technology.
This research project is divided into a total of six detailed subfields, with three institutions and ten companies within the consortium participating in research and development and commercialization.
Accordingly, Professor Kim Byung-chae's research team will receive a total project funding of 6.2 billion KRW over the next 8 years and 6 months.
The main research and development contents and participating researchers are ▲Development of self-hearing test and speech test devices using AI-based voice recognition (Otorhinolaryngology Professor Cho Hyung-ho) ▲Development of AI-based smart optical imaging devices for detecting diagnostic indicators of frequent eye diseases and development of therapeutic functional drug delivery systems (Ophthalmology Professor Yoon Kyung-chul) ▲Development of AI-based artificial intelligence models and diagnostic devices for predicting the occurrence and mortality risk of kidney diseases (Nephrology Professor Kim Su-wan) ▲Development of AI-based full-cycle classification and early diagnosis system for Alzheimer's disease (Radiology Professor Park Il-woo) ▲Establishment of AI-based clinical decision support system platform related to diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of hematologic malignancies (Hematology Professor Yang Deok-hwan) ▲Development of AI-based therapeutic agents for intractable pain diseases (Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Professor Choi Jung-il).
Through this, it is expected to greatly contribute to K-bio industrialization and globalization through technology transfer and product commercialization by participating companies.
Professor Kim Byung-chae stated, "This project provides a foothold for Chonnam National University Hospital to accelerate AI-based biohealth technology development through practical cooperation with Korea University Guro Hospital," and added, "We will faithfully carry out this research project to achieve remarkable results for the advancement of domestic medical care."
