[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] There are 14.18 million pet owners, accounting for more than one-quarter of the entire population. As more people treat animals like children or siblings, the number of households wanting to share special moments such as birthdays is also increasing. Pet health foods, which were once limited to small-scale handmade snacks, are expanding in market size thanks to growing popular demand.
On the 19th, the enthusiasm was also strong in online markets. From June 16 to July 16, sales of health foods for dogs and cats on Gmarket increased by 4% and 390%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Wet health foods and pouch-type health foods for cats rose by 550% and 500%, respectively, while wet health foods and pouch-type health foods for dogs increased by 430% and 7%, respectively. In particular, abalone milk sales jumped by 960% compared to last year.
SSG.com, an online mall affiliated with the Shinsegae Group, also announced that sales of pet health food products increased by 150% from June 1 to July 15, about 35 days, compared to last year. The number of products handled has tripled compared to two years ago. Especially this year, demand increased due to the combination of the heatwave and the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Popular products include ▲chicken breast ▲samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) ▲duck baeksuk (boiled duck) ▲eel porridge.
It is estimated that sales grew alongside as customers purchased pet products together when selecting health foods. This highlights the phenomenon of including pets in special celebrations. In fact, nutritional supplements, snacks, and health foods account for about 15% of total sales in the pet category on SSG.com. The share within the pet market is also increasing annually.
This growing interest is generally due to the increase in pet-owning households in Korea. According to the "2019 Animal Protection Public Awareness Survey" released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in April, the number of pet-owning households in Korea was approximately 5.91 million. Considering the average household size (2.4 members), the estimated pet-owning population is about 14.18 million. Given that the total population of South Korea is about 51.78 million as of this date, more than one-quarter (27.4%) of the population owns pets.

However, it is necessary to carefully check manufacturing dates, expiration dates, and daily recommended feeding amounts. It is also important to verify whether the product specifies quality labeling and other recommendations according to the Feed Management Act. For example, for "The Dog Health Food Samgyetang (150g)," the daily recommended feeding amount is 50?100g for small dogs and 75?100g for medium dogs. For cats, it recommends 20?50g for cats under 2kg and 50?80g for cats over 2kg. It is also recommended to adjust the feeding amount based on usual feeding amounts, stool condition, activity level, and size.
