UN Secretary-General "International Organizations Must Be Reformed to Address Global Inequality"
'COVID-19 Reveals Each Society's Weakness Like an X-ray'
Advanced Countries Invest Only in Their Own Survival, Neglect Support for Developing Nations
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Ant?nio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, mentioned that the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) reveals the fragile framework of each country like an X-ray.
Secretary-General Guterres made this remark during a remote lecture held on the birthday of the late Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa, regarding the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic. He pointed out, "The COVID-19 pandemic has also confirmed that the lies and errors such as the falsehood that the free market would provide healthcare for everyone, the illusion that we live in a world without racism, and the myth that we are all in the same boat were all untrue."
Guterres stated, "We have now reached a breaking point," urging a global effort to eliminate inequality. He particularly criticized developed countries for investing only in their own survival and failing to provide support for developing countries.
