"Civil Group Loses Lawsuit Against Airlines Demanding Reissuance of Expired Mileage"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] A civic group lost a lawsuit filed against airlines demanding the reissuance of airline mileage that expired due to the expiration of the validity period.
On the 17th, Judge Lee Sang-hyun of the Civil Division 3 at Seoul Southern District Court announced that he dismissed the claim of the plaintiff, the civic group 'Consumer Sovereignty Council,' in the lawsuit filed against Korean Air and Asiana Airlines for the payment of expired mileage. The court did not provide a separate explanation for the dismissal.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the aviation industry set the mileage validity period to 10 years in 2010. Mileage accumulated before 2008 was given an unlimited validity period, while mileage accumulated after 2008 was set to have a validity period of 10 years. Accordingly, mileage accumulated by airline passengers in 2008 all expired as of January 1 of last year.

In response, the consumer group Consumer Sovereignty Citizens' Council (Consumer Sovereignty) filed a lawsuit against the two airlines in February last year, claiming that "airline mileage is property accumulated by consumers through various economic activities, and extinguishing mileage is an illegal act infringing on property rights."
