Jeonnam Province-Gwangju City Selected as Finalists for 'Local Government-University Cooperation Regional Innovation Project'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province (Governor Kim Young-rok) announced on the 16th that it was finally selected for the "Local Government-University Cooperation-Based Regional Innovation Project," which was applied for as a government public contest project together with Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Lee Yong-seop).
The Local Government-University Cooperation-Based Regional Innovation Project is a Ministry of Education public contest project aimed at overcoming the crisis of local universities and achieving regional innovation through cooperation between local governments and universities.
A total of 14 local governments formed 10 platforms to apply for this contest.
Including on-site evaluations, three final locations were selected?Gwangju-Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, and Chungbuk?considering the local governments' active will, collaboration systems with universities, and other comprehensive factors.
The Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Innovation Platform project, applied for through collaboration between Gwangju and Jeonnam, will invest a total of 68.6 billion KRW (48 billion KRW national funds and 20.6 billion KRW local funds) to nurture local talent.
Jeonnam Province and Gwangju City designated Chonnam National University as the lead university to support the formation of cooperative relationships between universities and the region, fostering excellent talent and increasing youth settlement rates in the area. The project will be promoted together with 15 participating universities from Gwangju and Jeonnam, Gwangju-Jeonnam Technopark, and other related organizations.
The project focuses on nurturing regional innovation talent in two core areas: new energy industries and future transportation devices.
In particular, two tasks in the new energy industry field (energy efficiency improvement and climate change response-type renewable energy talent development) and one task in the future transportation device field (core talent development for future intelligent mobility new industries) are directly related to the Green Energy and Eco-friendly Future Mobility among the 10 representative tasks of the Korean New Deal policy announced by the Moon Jae-in administration. It is expected to contribute to innovation for leading the future society by the government.

Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, said, "It is expected to contribute to enhancing regional innovation capabilities through the participation, linkage, and cooperation of local governments, universities, and regional innovation institutions," and added, "We will promote the project to nurture talent in Gwangju and Jeonnam and establish a foundation for settlement to contribute to balanced national development."
