WEMAKEPRICE Sees Up to 400% Increase in Seafood Sales for Chobok Season
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Wemakeprice announced on the 16th that, analyzing the sales of health foods over the past week (from the 6th to the 12th of this month) to celebrate Chobok, the first of the three hottest days of summer, sales of marine health foods increased by up to 400% compared to July 2-8 of last year.
In particular, sales of cephalopod seafood such as nakji (small octopus), mun-eo (octopus), and jjukkumi (webfoot octopus) increased the most by 483%. Premium crustaceans like bada gangjae (lobster) also gained popularity with a 415% increase, and eel sales rose by 346%. Live abalone from Wando ranked 6th in sales in the ongoing summer health food special exhibition.
On the other hand, sales growth of chicken for baeksuk (boiled chicken) and samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) was relatively low at 152%, receiving less attention. Meat sales such as smoked duck slightly decreased.
This is interpreted as an increase in seafood consumption as a relative substitute for meat due to rising meat prices, and more consumers seeking various ingredients beyond samgyetang while enjoying gourmet meals at home during COVID-19.
Wemakeprice also analyzed that faster delivery systems have led to more consumers purchasing seafood from open markets even during the summer season.
