Chinese Foreign Ministry: "US Sanctions on Hong Kong Violate International Law... Will Impose Retaliatory Sanctions" (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's signing of the Hong Kong sanctions bill as a violation of international law and announced that it would impose retaliatory sanctions on U.S. agencies and personnel related to the Hong Kong sanctions. The confrontation between the U.S. and China is expected to intensify further.
On the 15th, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release, "China will take necessary countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights. China will sanction relevant U.S. personnel and institutions (companies)." It added, "Despite China's serious protests, the U.S. recently passed a law called the Hong Kong Autonomy Act," criticizing, "This is a malicious denigration of Hong Kong's national security legislation and a threat of sanctions against China."
Earlier, President Trump signed an executive order withdrawing Hong Kong's special treatment due to China's enforcement of the Hong Kong National Security Law and sanctioning Chinese officials, banks, organizations, and financial institutions involved in the implementation of the law. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs described this executive order as "a serious violation of international law and a violent interference in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs," stating, "The Chinese government firmly opposes and strongly condemns it."

Recently, the Chinese government has continued a strong confrontation with the U.S., exchanging more than five rounds of mutual retaliatory measures over issues including Hong Kong, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Taiwan.
