Gyeonggi Sea Cleaning Ship Named 'Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho'
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has decided to name the Gyeonggi Sea Cleaning Ship, which will be introduced by the end of this year to return a clean sea to the residents, as 'Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho.'
From the 2nd to the 21st of last month, Gyeonggi Province held a public contest for residents to name the ship under construction, aiming for completion by the end of the year. A total of 1,717 entries were received, reflecting the residents' strong interest in the Gyeonggi Sea and the cleaning ship.
The grand prize-winning entry, 'Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho,' was submitted by Jo Eun-hye of Suwon City and means maintaining the Gyeonggi Sea as a clean sea free of waste. It received final judging comments stating that it succinctly expresses the purpose and determination of the cleaning ship project.
The runner-up, 'Gyeonggi Pureunbadaho,' submitted by Hwang Gyu-sun of Namyangju City, expresses the meaning of cultivating the Gyeonggi Sea into a blue sea through the cleaning ship. The winners will receive local currency prizes of 500,000 KRW for the grand prize and 200,000 KRW for the runner-up. Additionally, 10 participants, including Kim Jang-cheol of Pyeongtaek City, selected by lottery, will receive gift certificates worth approximately 30,000 KRW as participation prizes.
Since 2018, reflecting Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung's commitment to creating a clean sea environment free of waste, the design of the cleaning ship was completed last year. The ship has been under construction since February this year at a shipyard in Goseong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, aiming for completion by the end of the year.
Once completed, starting next year, the cleaning ship will have the capability to directly collect marine waste such as abandoned fishing gear and nets from the seabed of Gyeonggi Province.
