[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A high school teacher in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do was arrested by the police on charges of installing a hidden camera in the girls' restroom at the school. It was reported that the teacher's mobile phone contained numerous illegal filming videos.
On the 9th, according to the Gimhae Jungbu Police Station in Gyeongnam, the police applied for an arrest warrant against Mr. A, a high school teacher in his 40s, on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
The police also conducted a pre-arrest suspect interrogation (warrant hearing) for Mr. A that morning.
According to the police, on the 24th of last month, a school staff member reported discovering a hidden camera in the first-floor girls' restroom of the school.
The responding police confirmed through the school's closed-circuit television (CCTV) that Mr. A had installed the camera in the girls' restroom and booked him that afternoon.
Mr. A admitted to installing the hidden camera during the police investigation but stated that since the staff discovered the camera on the same day it was installed, no significant footage was recorded.
However, upon checking Mr. A's mobile phone, the police found a large number of videos taken in restrooms and shower rooms presumed to be in other schools.
Based on the secured videos, the police are expanding the investigation to determine whether Mr. A installed hidden cameras and conducted illegal filming at other schools where he previously worked.
The police are investigating the hidden camera videos found on Mr. A's phone using digital forensic techniques.
