Statistics Korea Conducts Integrated Survey on Industry Characteristics of 380,000 Companies
Launching the Integrated Economic Statistics Survey Conducted Since 2009
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] The Statistics Korea will conduct the '2020 Integrated Economic Statistics Survey' from the 6th of this month to the 14th of next month. This survey has been conducted annually since 2009 (except in 2011 and 2016 when the Economic Census was conducted) to compile seven types of annual economic statistics necessary for national policy formulation, including mining and manufacturing surveys, service industry surveys, transportation industry surveys, business activity surveys, franchise surveys, corporate structure surveys, and small business status surveys.
The survey targets approximately 380,000 enterprises nationwide, selected as a sample using statistical methods to represent the entire population. It consists of basic items such as the main activities and business performance of enterprises over the past year, and characteristic items that identify industry-specific features such as store area, business hours, and whether e-commerce is conducted.
The survey will be conducted through local statistical offices and local governments, with investigators visiting or conducting non-face-to-face surveys* according to the preferred method of the business establishments. All investigators will comply with COVID-19 prevention guidelines by wearing masks during on-site surveys. Additionally, considering that COVID-19 may affect statistical quality, the survey will be conducted flexibly according to various situations.
The survey results will be announced through press releases and the National Statistical Portal (KOSIS) from November 2020 to February 2021 by survey type, and will be used as basic data for various statistics such as national income estimates and for national policy formulation related to supporting small businesses.
Kang Shinwook, Commissioner of Statistics Korea, said, "Although this is a difficult time for everyone due to COVID-19, accurate statistical compilation is essential to prepare statistics-based policies, so we ask for the active participation and responses of the surveyed businesses." He added, "The surveyed information is strictly protected under the Statistics Act (Article 33 on confidentiality) and is used only for statistical purposes, so there is no need to worry."
