First COVID-19 Case Confirmed in Elementary Student in Gwangju...Infected After Going to Church with Mother (Update)
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The first elementary school student infected with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been reported in Gwangju, where the cumulative number of confirmed cases has exceeded 100.
According to Gwangju City on the 5th, a male elementary school student residing in Buk-gu and a man in his 60s living in Jangdeok-dong, Gwangsan-gu, were registered as the 107th and 108th confirmed cases in the region. The 107th confirmed case, the elementary school student, is a family member of a previously confirmed case who attended worship at Ilgok Jungang Church.
This is the first time an elementary school student has been infected in Gwangju since the COVID-19 outbreak. The 107th confirmed case, known to be in the lower grades of elementary school, is reported to be an asymptomatic carrier. The school suspended in-person classes on the 2nd and 3rd and switched to remote learning. Health authorities stated they are currently tracing the movements of the 107th confirmed case. The 108th confirmed case, a man in his 60s, was confirmed to be linked to Geumyang Officetel (Geumyang Building) in Dong-gu.

These two individuals were confirmed positive just before midnight the previous day and were classified as confirmed cases on the 4th. Since the second wave of COVID-19 began in Gwangju on the 27th of last month, a total of 75 confirmed cases have occurred over eight days. By infection route, Geumyang Officetel accounts for the largest number with 18 cases, followed by Gwangju Sarang Church with 15, Ilgok Jungang Church with 14, Agape Silver Center with 7, Gwangneuksa Temple-related cases with 6, Jeju travel-related cases with 6, Hanul Nursing Home with 5, SKJ Hospital with 2, and 2 imported cases from overseas.
