Kakao Enters Cloud Market... Aiming to Launch Service Within the Year
Kakao Opens 'i Cloud' Homepage
[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] Kakao has entered the cloud market. It is expected to launch cloud services within this year.
According to the information technology (IT) industry on the 3rd, Kakao recently opened the Kakao 'i Cloud' homepage and introduced the cloud services currently under development, aiming for release within the year.
Kakao stated, "This is a cloud solution platform that consolidates 10 years of Kakao's data construction and operation know-how," adding, "We plan to offer various Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) options."
Kakao i Cloud will provide services such as an automated and optimized development environment for developers, an app engine supporting application development, and storage services for data retention.
Through i Cloud, Kakao also plans to offer artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning services. They are preparing a voice engine that interprets spoken language into text data, a vision engine that analyzes image content, and a translation engine that provides language translation.
Kakao's subsidiary, Kakao Enterprise, will operate i Cloud. However, since Kakao does not own data centers, the service is expected to start by residing in third-party data centers for the time being.

Kakao plans to enable i Cloud services to connect with cloud solutions such as Amazon and Microsoft. Kakao stated, "We believe it is necessary to own infrastructure such as data centers in the mid to long term and are internally reviewing this."
