Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education Cancels Education Union Unity Sports Festival
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] The Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education announced on the 3rd that it will cancel the annual local government employees' 'Hanmaeum Sports Festival' this year.
The Hanmaeum Sports Festival is an event held annually for local government employees to promote labor-management unity and communication among staff, according to the collective agreement between the Gyeongbuk Office of Education and the Gyeongbuk Office of Education Public Officials Labor Union. It is a large-scale event attended by more than 3,000 people.
This decision comes as a result of labor-management coordination, agreeing that holding a large-scale event where many people gather is not advisable at a time when a resurgence of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is expected.
Originally, the sports festival was scheduled to be held in Chilgok, Gyeongbuk, in April, but it was tentatively postponed to the second half of the year due to the spread of COVID-19, and has now been finally canceled.

Choi Sang-su, Director of the Administration Bureau, said, "Although it is regrettable to cancel the Hanmaeum Sports Festival, which has contributed to labor-management harmony, we made this difficult decision with the thought of protecting ourselves and our families and participating in the nationwide effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19."
