Gwangju Police Hold Regular Meeting of the 'Human Rights Committee'
Discussion and Feedback on Human Rights Protection Policies
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency (Chief Choi Gwanho) announced on the 1st that it held a regular meeting of the Human Rights Committee.
The regular meeting was held in compliance with quarantine guidelines such as disinfecting the building, wearing masks, and social distancing, with about 20 participants including Deputy Commissioner Yang Seongjin and Human Rights Committee Chairperson Yoon Gahyeon.
The newly established "Police Officer Human Rights Code of Conduct" and the progress of the recently promoted establishment of the "Police Workplace Council" were explained.
In addition, the human rights protection policies promoted by the Gwangju police, such as restorative policing activities and human rights protection during investigation procedures, were explained, and opinions from the human rights committee members were heard.
Chairperson Yoon Gahyeon said, "The Gwangju Police Agency is promoting various policies for human rights protection, and I ask the Gwangju police to take the lead in protecting citizens' human rights," adding, "We will play a practical role in identifying human rights violation factors in police work sites and providing consultation."
Deputy Commissioner Yang Seongjin of Gwangju Police Agency said, "Human rights in police work is the highest value that the police should pursue and a constitutional value. Police activities without human rights support are unsustainable," and added, "We will respect and act on human rights as the top priority value to protect socially vulnerable groups and to ensure that security sites are evaluated as human rights sites, creating an organizational culture."
Meanwhile, the Gwangju Police Agency Human Rights Committee consists of 11 external members (5 female members) and includes members from various fields such as the legal community, academia, civic groups, and religious organizations.
