[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Samsung Electronics has created a scaled-down model of its Pyeongtaek Campus Line 1, the world's largest semiconductor factory, using the toy blocks 'LEGO' to promote the safety of semiconductor production lines.
On the 29th, Samsung Electronics released a video titled "FAB on the Block: Secrets of the Cleanroom," which shows the process of making a 520:1 scale model of Pyeongtaek Line 1 using LEGO blocks. The video introduces how the semiconductor production line is protected from various dust particles through the LEGO factory model.
Samsung Electronics meticulously recreated the interior of the cleanroom, including the semiconductor line's air conditioning system, equipment, wafers, and automation systems, using over 15,000 LEGO blocks. The video vividly demonstrates how the cleanroom is maintained in a pristine condition using LEGO blocks. A cleanroom is a facility for producing semiconductors that require ultra-fine nano-scale processes. Since even a tiny dust particle can cause defects in the products, cleanrooms?where airborne particles, temperature, humidity, and pressure are kept constant?are essential facilities in semiconductor factories. It took eight days to create the three-minute video model, with Mr. Kim Seong-wan, the highest authority in Korea recognized as a LEGO Certified Professional by LEGO headquarters, participating in the project.
Samsung Electronics stated that one of the secrets to maintaining the world's best semiconductor manufacturing competitiveness is its unparalleled air conditioning system and cleanroom management capabilities. Starting with a windbreak forest that filters dust coming from around the business site, the air conditioning system performs multiple stages of filtering to maintain a clean cleanroom environment, Samsung added.

In particular, all workers on the line always wear dustproof suits, dustproof caps, dustproof gloves, safety shoes, and dustproof masks, and the air inside the line is purified through high-efficiency filters as it circulates. Samsung explained that the high-efficiency filters installed in the cleanroom can capture more than 99% of fine dust particles as small as 0.1㎛ and various viruses, making the possibility of virus inflow or internal virus recirculation extremely low.
