The startup town called Dragon Valley on the Pukyong National University campus has doubled in size over six years, attracting attention.
On the 29th, Pukyong National University announced that it had been designated by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups as a 'New Technology Startup Cluster Area' on a 40,000㎡ site at the Yongdang Campus.
The New Technology Startup Cluster Area is a government project that activates new technology startups by creating startup spaces within university or research institute sites to commercialize public technology, promote startups, and provide startup spaces.
In 2014, Pukyong National University was the first in the Yeongnam region to start creating a 20,000㎡ New Technology Startup Cluster Area at the Yongdang Campus. The area expanded to 30,000㎡ the following year and has now grown to 40,000㎡.
Currently, 400 companies are located here, employing about 2,000 staff members. The annual sales of resident companies reach 260 billion KRW.
Resident companies in the New Technology Startup Cluster Area receive various benefits under the Small and Medium Enterprise Startup Support Act, such as permission to establish urban-type factories and reductions in acquisition and property taxes. Another major advantage is the ability to utilize the university's human resources, facilities, and R&D infrastructure.
Pukyong National University named the New Technology Startup Cluster Area 'Dragon Valley' and operates the entire 330,000㎡ Yongdang Campus as an industry-academia-research innovation campus centered around this area.
At Yongdang Campus, Pukyong National University has attracted and is conducting various government projects related to industry-academia cooperation and startups, including the Ministry of Education's University Industry-Academia Cooperation Complex Project, Busan Research and Development Special Zone InnoPolis Campus, Ministry of SMEs and Startups' Early Startup Package Project, Busan City Startup Promotion District Project, Busan City Engineering Specialization Zone Project, and Busan Nam-gu Dragon Valley Youth Job Project.
