Ulsan Daegok Museum, 'The Great Heat Melts Even Goat Horns' Event
July Saturday Children's Experiential Learning Program ‥ Learning Traditional Culture Through Proverbs
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Ulsan Daegok Museum has launched a program that blends proverbs and heat for the July Saturday children's experiential learning to beat the hot summer.
Daegok Museum announced on the 29th that it will operate the 86th Saturday children's experiential learning program titled "The Great Heat Melts Even the Goat's Horns." This year, the museum's Saturday children's experiential learning is being conducted under the theme "Friends in Proverbs Made with Family."
This experiential learning program revisits the wise attitudes of our ancestors in overcoming the hot and humid weather of July through proverbs such as "The Great Heat Melts Even the Goat's Horns" and "If a rainbow stands in the west, do not tie cattle across the river." Participants will make bamboo water guns and rainbow fans to help beat the heat.
July is the month that includes Daeseo (大暑), the Great Heat, one of the 24 solar terms. Since ancient times, Daeseo has been known as a period of intense heat, so severe that there is a proverb saying "The Great Heat Melts Even the Goat's Horns." Daeseo often coincides with Jungbok (mid-summer), and there was a custom of going to valleys and other places to avoid the three hottest days of summer.
Also, July is a season with high humidity due to the monsoon and heat. On such days, sudden showers like rainstorms may occur. Since low pressure systems generally form in the west, ancestors predicted rain when a rainbow appeared in the west.
This experiential learning is available only through mail application in accordance with COVID-19 prevention measures. The museum accepts applications from the first 100 families on a first-come, first-served basis via its website and sends experiential materials by mail.
Applications can be made from 9 a.m. on July 1 to 6 p.m. on July 5 through the Ulsan Daegok Museum website. Participation is free of charge.
