'Industrial Structure Diversification' Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, Wins Excellence Award at Governance Local Politics Awards
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongwook Park] Pohang City, Gyeongbuk announced on the 28th that Mayor Lee Kang-deok received the Excellence Award in the Future Pioneering category at the '2020 Governance Local Politics Awards' on the 24th.
The 'Governance Local Politics Awards' is an award given to local government heads who have made efforts to expand autonomous decentralization based on governance. It is hosted by the Governance Center and supported by the Presidential Committee on Autonomy and Decentralization.
Since the 6th term of the elected mayor, Mayor Lee Kang-deok has worked to diversify the industrial structure away from the steel industry, focusing on fostering small and medium-sized enterprises as well as industries such as batteries, bio, and new materials.
Especially in the 7th term, he has been striving to realize the 'S Platform City' that creates an innovative ecosystem of a new industrial structure based on the 3S of Pohang’s identity: Steel, Sea, and Science. Due to these efforts, last year Pohang was designated as one of the three national strategic special zones including the Small and Medium Research and Development Special Zone, Battery Regulation-Free Special Zone, and Yeongilman Tourism Special Zone.
According to Pohang City, in this evaluation, the city received high marks due to visible achievements such as attracting investments from the big three electric vehicle battery companies?Ecopro, POSCO Chemical, and GS Construction?and advancing as a K-Bio hub city through the establishment of the Hanmi Science Smart Healthcare City.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, "It seems that the excellent R&D innovation capabilities of Pohang and the joint efforts of industry, academia, and research institutes have been well recognized externally," adding, "We will continue to actively foster future core industries such as batteries, bio, and hydrogen fuel cells alongside the steel industry to create a sustainable East Sea-centered city, Pohang."
