[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongwook Park] Gyeongju City, Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on the 25th that all 48 confirmed COVID-19 patients who had been hospitalized, ending with patient number 45, have been discharged.
Since the last confirmed case (number 49) on April 21, there had been no additional infections for over two months in Gyeongju. However, on the 22nd, a mother in her 30s and her 9-year-old son, who arrived from Kazakhstan, were consecutively confirmed positive, bringing the total cumulative confirmed cases in the region to 51.
The patient discharged on the 25th was a 70-year-old woman confirmed positive on April 4. She underwent a difficult treatment process for 82 days at Pohang Medical Center and was discharged after testing negative twice before returning to her family.
After the first confirmed case occurred on February 22, two additional confirmed cases were reported on the same day in Gyeongju. When the second confirmed patient tested positive posthumously from a specimen, there was an emergency in tracing the infection route. Subsequently, confirmed cases occurred among Shincheonji church members, visitors to Daegu, and small group infections. However, due to the active cooperation of confirmed patients during epidemiological investigations, rapid quarantine measures were implemented, receiving positive evaluations.
Mayor Nak-Young Joo of Gyeongju said, "I ask for the unwavering cooperation of citizens until the day COVID-19 ends by strictly following the five basic rules of social distancing in daily life, such as staying home for 3 to 4 days when feeling sick."
