Songdo Beach, famous for the scenic Baeksasongrim (White Sand Pine Forest), was a popular destination attracting about 100,000 vacationers annually until the early 1980s. However, due to the aftereffects of industrialization, the beach lost its function and has been left neglected, losing its former appearance.
Recently, Pohang City has been promoting an 'economic base-type urban regeneration New Deal project' with the concept of an ICT-based marine industry platform, focusing on Songdo Beach and the old Pohang Port area to prepare for Pohang's new future.
Songdo Beach is located in the core section of the Ocean Greenway project, a detailed plan within the Greenway development that connects the entire Pohang area as a green ecological axis. Pohang City plans to restore the lost white sandy beach through the 'White Sand Restoration Project,' build the Dongbin Bridge, and create a mooring yard at the Hyeongsan River Marina.
Through the playground development of this urban regeneration New Deal project, the area will be specialized as a place where various marine sports can be enjoyed, becoming a key hub of the Yeongilman Tourism Special Zone, according to Pohang City. Most notably, 25 nighttime safety lighting facilities called Green Poles (15 meters high) have been installed at 60-meter intervals along a 1.3 km section from the Hyeongsan River estuary to the Fisheries Cooperative live fish auction site, which is expected to brighten the nights of Songdo significantly.

Kim Hyun-gu, head of the Urban Regeneration Division of Pohang City, said, "Just as the sand from the old Jungang Elementary School site became a new spark for the restoration of Songdo's white sandy beach, the installation of the nighttime safety lighting facilities Green Pole for the marine sports playground will make Songdo's nights brighter and more attractive." He emphasized, "We will strive to revitalize the long-stagnant local economy and restore Songdo's former glory so that many tourists and citizens can visit."
