[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The 'Bucheon International Comics Festival,' the largest comics festival in Korea, will be held online due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
According to the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency on the 23rd, the 23rd Bucheon International Comics Festival will be held for nine days from September 19, starting with a closed-door opening ceremony, through the festival's website and various SNS platforms until the 27th.
The comics festival, which was held annually during the Liberation Day week in August, has changed its schedule to September and canceled all offline events to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19.
The main attractions of the festival, the 2019 Bucheon Manhwa Award special exhibition "Gopge Jarang Jasik" and the 2020 Bucheon Manhwa Award special exhibition "Udookeoni," will be available to visitors through the festival's website. Visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of the exhibition scenes along the exhibition route, and the images of the displayed comics can be enlarged for a more vivid and detailed viewing experience.
The comics festival can also be experienced within a game. Using the popular online game "Minecraft," visitors are invited to the festival virtually. A Bucheon International Comics Festival map has been created within the game, allowing users to explore the festival online, view comic exhibitions, and participate in events.
The "Gyeonggi International Cosplay Festival," which annually selects the best costume player (a person who dresses up as comic characters), will also be held online. Netizens can directly select the best costume player through SNS.
Additionally, a pet cosplay contest will be held. Participation is possible by uploading photos of pets in cosplay along with hashtags, and pets receiving the most 'likes' will be selected.
Shin Jongchul, director of the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency, said, "The unprecedented COVID-19 situation is bringing many changes to cultural and artistic festivals," adding, "We will prepare this comics festival so that audiences can enjoy comic content and exhibition culture without worrying about infection."
