125 Livestock Burial Sites in Gyeonggi-do Pass Safety Inspections with 'No Issues'
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province conducted a safety inspection of livestock burial sites within the province ahead of the summer monsoon season and confirmed that all sites were free of abnormalities.
The province formed an inspection team to prevent environmental pollution of soil and rivers caused by the leakage of decomposed residues or leachate from livestock burial sites during heavy rains. From the 15th to the 19th, the team conducted a full inspection of 125 livestock burial sites managed in nine cities and counties within the province: Paju, Gimpo, Anseong, Yeoju, Yongin, Pocheon, Hwaseong, Yangju, and Yeoncheon, the province announced on the 23rd.
These livestock burial sites were established and managed due to outbreaks of livestock infectious diseases, including 72 sites for African Swine Fever (ASF), 52 sites for Avian Influenza (AI), and 1 site for Foot-and-Mouth Disease.
The inspection team focused on overall management conditions such as whether leachate leakage occurred, the condition of drainage maintenance, installation of facilities to prevent rainwater inflow, availability of covers, and any collapse or erosion around the burial sites.
The inspection results found no burial sites that could impact environmental pollution due to collapse, erosion, or leachate leakage.
Following this full inspection, the province plans to proactively identify and dispose of burial sites that may pose a risk of secondary environmental pollution. Additionally, it will establish a close cooperative system with the relevant cities and counties to strengthen post-management efforts such as leachate collection and odor removal.
