Convenience Store Bestsellers That Change with Temperature
If the daily average exceeds 24 degrees, carbonated drinks
Ice cups sell like hotcakes when it exceeds 30 degrees
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] The peak season for convenience stores, summer, is approaching. As the weather gets hotter, sales of beverages, beer, ice cream, and ice cups increase, leading to a rise in revenue. Among summer products, there are items that sell particularly well depending on the temperature.
According to the convenience store industry on the 17th, the core of summer sales consists of beverages, beer, and ice cups. The higher the mercury rises, the more these items sell. For convenience store beer, the critical temperature for increased sales is 26 degrees Celsius. Beer sales increase starting from a daily high temperature of 26 degrees (late May). According to Seven Eleven, beer sales from May 15, when temperatures began to rise, to June 14 increased by 18.1% compared to the same period last month.
Carbonated drinks sell well when the temperature exceeds 24 degrees, bottled water and sports drinks at 29 degrees, and ice cups at 30 degrees. For sports drinks, sales explode when the daily average high temperature approaches 35 degrees. During the same period, sales of beverages and ice cups increased by 17.6% and 85.3%, respectively. GS25 reported that ice cup sales increased by 26.0% last month, when temperatures fluctuated around 30 degrees due to early heat. On June 6, when the daytime temperature in Seoul reached 27.6 degrees, 680,000 ice cups were sold. GS25 sold about 100 million ice cups from May to September last year, generating sales of approximately 70 billion KRW. CU also sold 100 million ice cups last year. Conversely, there are "temperature-stable products" whose sales change little with temperature, such as snacks, ramen, and soju.

Meanwhile, Seven Eleven analyzed the correlation between daily high temperatures and daily sales indices over the past five years and found that the temperature determining the convenience store peak season is 19 degrees Celsius. The sales index represents relative sales at a specific time, with the average daily sales set at 100; exceeding 100 means higher sales. When the average high temperature over three days reaches 19 degrees and the sales index begins to exceed 100, the convenience store peak season starts. Conversely, when temperatures remain below 19 degrees for more than three days and the sales index falls below 100, the peak season ends and the off-season begins. The peak season for convenience stores is July and August. According to Seven Eleven's monthly sales index last year, July and August recorded the highest sales of the year at 107.5 and 109.2, respectively.
