Supreme Court to Announce List of Preliminary Candidates for Supreme Court Justices Tomorrow
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The Supreme Court will announce the candidates for the new Supreme Court Justice, who will succeed Justice Kwon Soon-il (61, Judicial Research and Training Institute Class 14), whose term ends this September, on the 18th.
According to the legal community on the 17th, the Supreme Court will disclose the list of candidates who agreed to be reviewed among those nominated for Justice Kwon's successor since the 22nd of last month through the court's website the following day.
The Supreme Court will also post information submitted by the candidates regarding their education, major career achievements, assets, and military service, and will collect public opinions for two weeks.
Afterward, the Supreme Court will hold a Judicial Nomination Committee meeting to review the nominees and select at least three candidates deemed suitable for the position of Supreme Court Justice.
The Judicial Nomination Committee consists of 10 members, including senior justices, the head of the Court Administration Office, the Minister of Justice, and the President of the Korean Bar Association.
In the committee, a "judge member who is not a Supreme Court Justice" participates as a panel judge. The National Judges' Representative Meeting has appointed Judge Baek Ju-yeon (42, Class 36) of the Seoul Central District Court as the member through an online vote.
Additionally, the National Judges' Representative Meeting recently formed a support team to assist Judge Baek in his activities related to the Supreme Court Justice nomination, following discussions at the regular meeting on the 25th of last month.
It was decided that it would be unreasonable for Judge Baek, unlike other members, to handle his current judicial duties while also engaging in nomination activities, hence the formation of the support team.
The support team consists of four members, including Kim Hyung-ryul, Vice Chairman of the National Judges' Representative Meeting and Chief Judge of the Daejeon Family Court (50, Class 32), Song Seung-yong, Chief Judge of the Suwon District Court (46, Class 29), Kim Joo-mi, Judge of the Seoul Bankruptcy Court (39, Class 37), and Ryu Young-jae, Judge of the Daegu District Court (37, Class 40).
They will begin the process of assisting Judge Baek in selecting candidates once the Supreme Court announces the nominees the following day.
