View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] As the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in the Seoul metropolitan area shows no signs of slowing down, concerns are rising that the anticipated resurgence after autumn could come sooner. The metropolitan area, with its dense population and frequent interactions, has always been pointed out by health authorities as a place where sporadic cluster infections could quickly lead to a large-scale outbreak. Although cluster infections that began last month at clubs, logistics centers, and door-to-door sales companies have somewhat eased, delayed contact tracing during this process has resulted in a significant number of secondary and subsequent transmissions.
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters, 37 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed on the 15th. Although the daily new cases have remained below 50 for three consecutive days, considering that the number of diagnostic tests conducted is less than half compared to weekdays, the situation cannot be considered reassuring. Of the 37 new cases, 24 are locally transmitted, with 22 of those in the metropolitan area.
Health authorities report that the number of patients isolated and receiving treatment in the metropolitan area has increased about threefold compared to a month ago (309 as of May 15 to 906). The health authorities believe that medical resources such as negative pressure hospital beds for patient treatment are still at a sufficient level. However, they are also mindful of the possibility that if sporadic cluster infections spread and the transmission chains are not cut off in time, a large-scale outbreak could occur. Before the meeting on this day, Park Neung-hoo, the first head of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, stated, "We will strive to suppress the number of patients to a level that the medical system can handle, while stably securing quarantine supplies, treatment beds, and medical personnel in preparation for a resurgence."
As warnings about the possibility of a COVID-19 resurgence grow stronger, concerns over mask supply measures have deepened among authorities. The government has been implementing a public mask system since February, monitoring production, sales, and inventory daily after mask shortages emerged due to COVID-19. This system limits the quantity each person can purchase. There are various discussions within and outside the authorities about whether to end or extend the current notice, which was originally set to expire at the end of this month. In particular, news that the purchase limit per person might be significantly increased or that public supply might be discontinued in favor of private sector distribution has sparked criticism that it causes confusion at the frontline.
Additionally, the unexpectedly positive response to droplet-blocking masks recently sold by some companies adds to the dilemma. To flexibly supply masks according to consumer demand, it would be more efficient for each production and sales company to autonomously adjust supply and demand. However, this would require a major overhaul or elimination of the public supply system, which explicitly regulates distribution channels and quantities. Nonetheless, the possibility that mask supply could become unstable again if patient numbers surge during a future resurgence cannot be ruled out. Considering these circumstances, the government is reportedly preparing to announce a reorganization of the public mask supply system soon.
