National Palace Museum, Academic Symposium on Preservation of 6·25 War Cultural Heritage

View original imageThe National Palace Museum of Korea announced on the 15th that it will hold an academic symposium titled "The Korean War and Cultural Heritage Preservation" via YouTube at 1:30 PM on the 19th.
This event will highlight the relationship between war and the preservation and management of cultural heritage, and seek ways to protect cultural heritage in disaster preparedness. Professor Kim Young-na of Seoul National University will deliver the keynote speech on "War and Cultural Properties, War and Memory," and Jang Sang-hoon, curator at the National Museum of Korea, will present on "Protecting Cultural Heritage at the National Museum during the Korean War." Kim Chu-yeon, head of the Cultural Heritage Team at the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, will discuss "Damage and Restoration Efforts of Temples and Sacred Cultural Properties Due to the Korean War," Jang Ho-su, director of the Baekje Historic City Research Institute, will speak on "War and Cultural Heritage ? Postwar Restoration and Recovering the True Form of Cultural Heritage," and Kim Byung-yeon, officer of the International Cooperation Division at the Cultural Heritage Administration, will explain "The Unrelenting History of Protecting Cultural Properties from War."

In connection with this symposium, the National Palace Museum of Korea will also provide an online viewing opportunity of six artifacts, including the "Hyeonjong Eobo (顯宗御寶)" and "Munjeong Wanghu Eobo (文定王后御寶)," which were illegally taken abroad during the chaos of the Korean War but safely returned. Seo Jun, a curator at the National Palace Museum, will provide a video explaining the repatriation process and the royal seals of the Joseon Dynasty. This will be available on the National Palace Museum’s website starting on the 19th.
