Cooling Asphalt Heat and Removing Fine Dust... Seven 'Clean Road' Sites Installed in Seoul
6 Additional Locations Including Balsan, Jongno 3-ga, Janghanpyeong Stations... Sejong-daero 340m Section Operational from the 15th
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 14th that it will additionally install Clean Roads, which lower the temperature of asphalt heated by the summer heat and are also effective in removing dust from roads, at six locations within Seoul.
In particular, due to the recent sudden rise in temperature, the Clean Road installed on Sejong-daero will be prioritized for operation starting from the 15th.
The Clean Road is a facility installed in small square shapes along the road centerline, which uses underground water discharged from subway stations to spray water onto the road surface.
Last summer, Seoul installed 135 Clean Roads over a 340m section of Sejong-daero and operated them three times a day, resulting in cooling the heated asphalt and reducing fine dust on the road.
Accordingly, this year the city is additionally installing Clean Roads at six locations: Balsan Station (280m, 143 units), Jungmi Station (156m, 53 units), Hyochang Park Front Station (255m, 86 units), Jongno 3-ga Station (168m, 60 units), Jongmyo Front (385m, 129 units), and Janghanpyeong Station (150m, 102 units).
The city also plans to investigate the possibility of installing Clean Roads at all 368 subway stations and four water recycling centers (Seonam, Jungnang, Tancheon, Nanji) through the '2020 Clean Road Basic and Detailed Design Project' and consider further expansion.

Kim Hak-jin, Director of Safety at Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, "We have expanded the installation of Clean Roads, which are effective in lowering the temperature of asphalt surfaces heated during summer and in removing fine dust generated by tire dust, etc. We ask for citizens' understanding as water spraying may cause inconvenience during walking or vehicle traffic."
