[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) even caught the ankles of racehorses.
As COVID-19 showed signs of spreading again, mainly in the metropolitan area, the Korea Racing Authority’s Busan-Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters extended the suspension of operations at Let's Run Park 'Racecourse' several times, continuing until the 18th.
To soothe the disappointed hearts of racing fans who eagerly awaited the resumption of horse racing, the Korea Racing Authority recently revealed interesting stories about famous racehorses from the Busan-Gyeongnam region, which have been re-highlighted on YouTube and other platforms.
The memorable famous racehorses that heated up YouTube include Dangdaebulpae, Indie Band, and Gyeongbu-daero.
‘Dangdaebulpae,’ who wrote a new chapter in Korean horse racing history, was a small-sized horse with a strong competitive spirit, winning the love of racing fans.
Dangdaebulpae, who earned much affection from racing fans with his competitive spirit born from his small stature, recorded a total of 19 wins out of 32 races with a winning rate of 59.4% over four years from his debut in 2009 to retirement in 2013. His outstanding performance was fully demonstrated in graded races, with 10 of his 19 wins coming from such events.
In particular, he achieved an astonishing record of winning the President’s Cup graded race three years in a row. In December 2014, Busan-Gyeongnam Racecourse erected a statue to honor the achievements of this famous horse who rewrote the history of Korean horse racing. What is he doing now? He is said to be spending his second life at Isidol Ranch in Jeju Island.
There is a famous horse that was the first in Korean horse racing to simultaneously win the President’s Cup and the Grand Prix. That horse is ‘Indie Band.’
‘Indie Band,’ who debuted in 2012, recorded 8 wins out of 13 races with a winning rate of 61.5%. In the following year, 2013, he became the first domestic horse to simultaneously win the President’s Cup and the Grand Prix, and was selected as the representative horse of the year and the best domestic horse.
He ran at his peak with excellent racing ability but faced early retirement due to injury in 2014. Currently, he is active as a stud horse in Jeju Island, dreaming of becoming a bloodline representing Korean horse racing.
‘Gyeongbu-daero,’ who boasted a fantastic partnership with jockey Choi Si-dae, is also one of the famous horses that illuminated Korean horse racing.
Gyeongbu-daero, a son of the so-called prestigious racehorse family ‘Magnify,’ was loved by racing fans from his debut in 2011 due to his excellent pedigree and physique weighing over 500kg.
