An Seungnam, Mayor of Guri, "Following the June 10 Uprising, I will create a Special City for Citizen Happiness"
[Asia Economy (Guri) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] An Seung-nam, mayor of Guri City, promised in a commemorative speech ahead of the 33rd anniversary of the June 10 Democratic Uprising to develop Guri City into a "Special City for Citizen Happiness."
In his commemorative speech, Mayor An stated, "Regardless of occupation or class, the unified voice that heated the asphalt of June with slogans such as 'Abolish the Yushin Constitution, Overthrow Dictatorship, Achieve Direct Elections' was an anti-dictatorship and democratization movement based on Article 1 of the Constitution, which states 'The Republic of Korea is a democratic republic,' and that all sovereignty resides with the people and all power comes from the people."
He continued, "Through the June 29 Declaration, the fruit of the uprising, it became possible for the people to directly elect the president with their own hands, and grassroots democracy and local autonomy, which had been interrupted for 30 years since the May 16 coup d'?tat, were revived by the power of the 'Mincho (民草)'?the common people?confirming that the nation can advance as a country of the people by the power of the people."
He added, "Now, 33 years after the June Uprising, as the elected mayor of Guri who inherits the spirit of the candlelight that burned in the square, I will always think and strive together with 200,000 awakened citizens to overcome the global COVID-19 pandemic and to make democracy better and stronger."

Guri City promised to raise the human rights awareness of public officials so that the spirit of the June Uprising, won by the citizens, can take deeper root in the daily lives of citizens. The city will also ensure that any citizen can participate in city administration through policy proposals and communication, establishing deliberative democracy where transparent administration is realized, thereby making Guri City a "Special City for Citizen Happiness."
