Dobong-gu Mayor Lee Dong-jin Attends 'Climate Crisis Emergency Declaration' Ceremony
Urgent Call for Active Cooperation Between National and Local Governments to Address Climate Crisis Emergency and Emphasis on Public Responsibility and Collective Action for Sustainable Development
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dobong-gu (Mayor Lee Dong-jin) attended the "Republic of Korea Basic Local Governments Climate Crisis Emergency Declaration Ceremony" held at 3:30 PM on the 5th in the National Assembly Members' Office Building Grand Conference Room, declaring cooperation and commitment among local government councils in response to the climate crisis.
This declaration ceremony was held to provide an opportunity for basic local governments to take the lead in responding to the climate crisis and to explore cooperation measures amid the international situation where Korea's status in the international community must be elevated and a proactive response to the climate crisis must be established ahead of the implementation of the new climate regime (Paris Agreement) in 2021.
Under the theme "The Role of Local Governments in Responding to the Climate Crisis," the ceremony was co-hosted by the National Association of Mayors, Governors, and District Heads, the Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition Local Government Council, the Sustainable Development Local Government Council, and ICLEI Korea Office. Attendees included members of the National Assembly, the Ministry of Environment, and mayors, governors, district heads, and officials from over 30 local governments.
Additionally, over 200 basic local governments signed in agreement with the declaration.

Furthermore, requests were made for institutional and economic support measures from the central government for basic local governments' climate crisis response, sharing of regional case studies on implementation plans such as greenhouse gas emission reduction and adaptation plans following the climate crisis emergency declaration, and discussions on directions for climate crisis response and the Green New Deal.
Mayor Lee Dong-jin of Dobong-gu, through the declaration of cooperation and commitment by the local government councils, urged active cooperation between the nation and local governments in the climate crisis emergency situation, emphasizing the public responsibility for sustainable development and the practice of all members of society.

Meanwhile, Dobong-gu, as the chair city of the 3rd Sustainable Development Local Government Council, joined the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) in 2019 to participate in climate change response efforts such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing urban resilience.
In particular, in January of this year, Dobong-gu became the first autonomous district in Seoul to receive certification as a "UN University Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE)" from the United Nations University, promoting the values and goals of sustainable development.
