Jeonnam Provincial Council and Eastern Jeonnam Members of the National Assembly Strongly Request the 'Yeosun Incident Special Act No. 1 Bill'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Jeonnam Provincial Council's Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident Special Committee held a meeting on the 29th of last month at Suncheon National University with five elected members of the National Assembly from the eastern Jeonnam region and the Yeosun Incident Bereaved Families Association, requesting that the "Special Act on the Truth Investigation and Restoration of Honor for the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident" (hereinafter referred to as the Special Act) be adopted as the first bill, the committee announced on the 3rd.
At the meeting, the eastern region National Assembly members pledged, "We will unite our efforts to ensure that the Yeosun Incident Special Act is enacted in the 21st National Assembly," and promised, "We will work towards the Democratic Party's adoption of the party stance for the enactment of the Yeosun Incident Special Act and the proposal of a unified special bill."
The attending lawmakers unanimously signed a pledge during their candidacy for the April 15 general election that, once elected, they would prioritize the enactment of the Special Act and take the lead to ensure its prompt passage.
Chairperson Kang Jeong-hee said, "Although it is belated, my heart aches when I think of the bereaved families who have lived under the unjust historical burden for 72 years," emphasizing, "Now it is the National Assembly's turn to respond."
On the following day, the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident Special Committee held a meeting with the Jeollanam-do executive branch to review the progress of the Special Act's enactment.
On that day, Chairperson Kang stated, "Victim investigations must be conducted as soon as possible. In the case of the Jeju April 3 Incident, the investigation alone took seven years, and the victim investigation results conducted by Jeju Province before the enactment of the Special Act were fully recognized," adding, "Considering that the bereaved families are elderly, the investigation must be carried out urgently."
