Daejeon City Strengthens Overloaded Vehicle Prevention and Joint Crackdown... 73 Vehicles Already Caught and Fined in First Half of Year
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City will strengthen preventive publicity and joint crackdowns on overloaded vehicles this month. Prior to the crackdown, the city measured about 3,000 vehicles during this year's overloaded vehicle enforcement, detected 73 violating vehicles, and imposed fines totaling about 33 million KRW.
The city announced on the 1st that from the 8th to the 26th of this month, it has designated the period as the "Intensive Crackdown Period on Overloaded Vehicles" and will conduct joint preventive publicity and crackdowns in cooperation with the National Land Management Office, Chungnam Provincial Government, and the police.
During this period, the city plans to visit large construction sites, construction machinery rental companies, and freight transport associations to guide transport-related personnel to comply with the obligation of pre-management of cargo loading. At the same time, by frequently changing the crackdown locations by time, the city will focus on preventing detours around major crackdown points and axle manipulation acts by overloaded vehicles.
The crackdown targets vehicles that exceed axle load of 10 tons, total weight of 40 tons, width of 2.5 m, height of 4.0 m, or length of 16.7 m, according to the Enforcement Decree of the Road Act.
Drivers of violating vehicles will be fined up to 3 million KRW depending on the violation and frequency, and drivers who violate prohibitions such as obstructing cargo load measurement will face imprisonment of up to one year or fines up to 10 million KRW.
Typically, the impact of overloaded vehicles on road facilities is equivalent to the passage of 110,000 passenger cars when the axle load is 11 tons, and when the axle load is 15 tons, it is known to have an impact equivalent to the passage of 390,000 passenger cars.
These overloaded vehicles cause more than 10,000 cases of road damage annually, resulting in an annual road maintenance cost of 42 billion KRW, causing enormous social expenditure.
Additionally, overloaded vehicles have about twice the fatality rate compared to general vehicle accidents when explosions or fires occur even in minor accidents, making them a major cause of large-scale casualties.
