"Egret at Songpa Seongnaecheon?"... Exploring Ecology While Walking Songpa Dullegil
Ecological Exploration Program Along 4 Songpa Dullegil Courses... Encounter Rare Urban Wildlife Like Hwangjorongi and White-necked Waterhens
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) is operating 'Stories of Friends Living on the Trail,' where visitors can experience various natural ecosystems while walking the 'Songpa Dullegil' trail.
Since 2018, as a key project of the 7th local government administration, the district has been developing the 'Songpa Dullegil.' The Songpa Dullegil is a 21 km circular trail connecting four waterways surrounding Songpa-gu: Seongnaecheon, Jangjicheon, Tancheon, and the Han River. Each of the four courses offers diverse ecological environments.
Course 1, 'Seongnaecheon-gil (6 km),' features wildflower colonies and rice farming experience areas, allowing visitors to enjoy natural scenery alongside urban landscapes. Course 2, 'Jangjicheon-gil (4.5 km),' offers paths lined with metasequoia and pine trees, giving a feeling of being immersed in a forest. Especially on Course 3, 'Tancheon-gil (7.4 km),' which includes an ecological landscape conservation area, visitors can encounter rare flora and fauna such as the white-naped crane, herons, and the natural monument peregrine falcon, which are hard to see in the city. Course 4, 'Han River-gil (3.2 km),' crosses the Han River Park, providing opportunities for leisure and relaxation.
The district actively utilizes the ecological diversity of Songpa Dullegil to operate the walking ecological exploration program 'Stories of Friends Living on the Trail' from June 7 to the end of November. Participants can choose their preferred section among the four courses and explore with a forest guide.
In addition to observing the species inhabiting each course, the program offers explanations about the lesser-known historical and cultural origins of Songpa’s waterways, providing a rich and enjoyable experience.
The program runs every Saturday and Sunday, and every other Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all Seoul citizens, and youth applicants must be at least 4th graders in elementary school within the district.
Considering the COVID-19 situation, the district plans to conduct the program in small groups of about 10 people per session.
Participants must make a reservation in advance through the Seoul Public Reservation Service website.

Mayor Park Seong-su stated, “Songpa is rare in Seoul for having four waterways, allowing a healthy ecological environment even in the city. Starting with this ecological exploration, we will develop various linked programs such as Seokchon Lake, Olympic Park, and Mongchontoseong to make Songpa Dullegil a representative walking tourism destination in Seoul.”
