Mokpo National University Selected for 13 New Research Projects by National Research Foundation of Korea
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Mokpo National University (President Park Min-seo) announced on the 28th that 13 projects were finally selected in the ‘2020 Academic and Humanities & Social Sciences Projects and Basic Research Projects in Science and Technology’ supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and ICT, which were announced in May.
The Academic and Humanities & Social Sciences Projects and Basic Research Projects in Science and Technology aim to expand South Korea’s future capabilities by strengthening creative and challenging basic research and nurturing excellent researchers, enhancing the national research and development (R&D) achievements of universities, and strengthening academic research capabilities.
Mokpo National University had a total of 13 projects finally selected, including ▲ 2 projects in Humanities and Social Sciences New Researchers (Professor Lee Seong-nam of the Department of Finance and Insurance, Lecturer Lee Kwang-soon of the Department of English Language and Literature) ▲ 3 projects in Regional University Excellent Scientists (Professor Bae Min-seok of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Professor Seong Jin-taek of the Department of Convergence Software, Professor Jeon Hee-seok of the Department of Electronics and Information Communication Engineering) ▲ 8 projects in Basic Science and Engineering Research (Professor Kang Jang-won of the Department of Physics, Professor Shin In-cheol of the Department of Information Security, Professor Oh Myung-ho of the Department of Architectural Engineering, Professor Yoo Choong-yeol of the Department of Chemistry, Professor Lee Junho of the Department of Mathematics Education, Professors Ok Min-ho, Park Jin-woo, and Baek Dong-jae of the Department of Pharmacy).
In particular, among the selected projects, three were from the Department of Pharmacy, demonstrating that Mokpo National University possesses high-level research capabilities in the health and medical fields.
The principal investigators of the selected projects will receive a total of about 1.7 billion KRW over 1 to 5 years per project and will actively conduct basic research in various fields such as analysis of unknown organic indicator components in ultrafine dust, development of deep learning-based group testing systems, blockchain-based energy efficiency improvement, and research on factors inducing vascular endothelial aging and dysfunction.

Lee Sang-chan, Director of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, said, “The final selection of 13 projects in this Korea Research Foundation project proves the excellent research capabilities and environment of Mokpo National University’s faculty,” and added, “We will continue to strive to strengthen specialized research capabilities in the southwestern region according to the medium- and long-term development plan for industry-academic cooperation, focusing on advancing research infrastructure for regional key new industries and enhancing research capabilities in the humanities and cultural arts fields.”
