[Asia Economy Reporter Son Sun-hee] The Blue House announced on the 26th that President Moon Jae-in, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, and other senior government officials have decided to return 30% of their salaries for the next four months, and that the amount will be allocated to the Workers' Welfare Promotion Fund to be used for unemployment measures.
Kang Min-seok, the Blue House spokesperson, stated in an afternoon briefing, "Including President Moon's donation of 23.08 million won, the total amount of salary returns from senior officials is estimated to be 1.8 billion won," adding, "Through the Workers' Welfare Promotion Fund, the funds will be used for special employment workers or freelancers who are outside the scope of employment insurance coverage."
Earlier, about 140 senior government officials, including President Moon, the three chiefs and senior secretaries of the Blue House, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, and ministers and vice ministers, decided in March to return 30% of their salaries for four months in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
Meanwhile, during the Cabinet meeting presided over by President Moon at the Blue House earlier that morning, Kang said the president urged Lee Eui-kyung, head of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, "As the weather gets warmer, students may find it uncomfortable to wear masks, so please ensure thorough management until the end."
