US Issues 'Warning' Over Hong Kong National Security Law Legislation 추진
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] On the 21st (local time), the United States strongly opposed China's push to enact a new national security law for Hong Kong, stating that it destabilizes Hong Kong.
According to U.S. media on the 21st (local time), Morgan Ortagus, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, criticized China's statement on the national security law as undermining China's commitments and obligations.
She also warned that any effort to impose a national security law that does not reflect the will of Hong Kong residents would make the situation very unstable, and such actions would face strong condemnation from the United States and the international community.
President Donald Trump also warned that the U.S. would respond strongly if China enacts and enforces a new national security law. Speaking to reporters at the White House regarding questions about the push to enact the national security law, President Trump said, "No one knows yet, so I don't know what it is," but added, "If it happens, we will handle that issue very strongly."
China announced at a press conference on the same day that it plans to discuss the enactment of a national security law for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the upcoming National People's Congress meeting. China is stepping in to directly enact the Hong Kong national security law instead of the Hong Kong legislature.
